What do I need to Teach English as a Second Language in Asia?

What do I need to Teach English as a Second Language (ESL) in Asia?

What are the Job and Working Requirements for Foreigners in Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Japan, Indonesia?

This is what I found out when I was laid off from work in Telecommunications in the US. My job had allowed me to travel to parts of Asia which included Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia and experience the culture and lifestyle while working there. So I considered teaching overseas for a better quality of life. Since I am a native English speaker the answer seemed obvious. Teach English.

Searching for TEFL and TESOL programs online raised many, many red flags. All it seemed was that this overwhelming information was a ploy to help me part ways from my hard earned money. I was read conflicting things from different places.

Like you need a degree, yet somewhere else it would say you don?t need a degree. What did I really need?

While my wife and I were traveling in Cambodia, we visited with a principle at a University in Phnom Penh. He had worked as an English teacher in Japan, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, Indonesia and Cambodia for over 33 years. He gave me good guidance as to what would be required to teach English in Asia and to be totally legitimate with those countries foreigner worker regulation.

What I needed was:

1) TEFL - Teaching English as a Foreign Language or TESOL - Teaching to English to Speakers of Other Languages

He said that I needed either a 120 hours TEFL, TESOL or CELTA Certification

University of Cambridge's CELTA and Trinity College London's CertTESOL.

These two courses both have 120+ hours with 6+ hours supervised teaching.

He said that online TEFL or TESOL certificates weren?t considered as real training. They work out cheaper but you get what you pay for in the long run.

2) Clean Police Record Check

To teach you need to provide documentation of a clean police record from where you live. This can be obtained from your local police station within your country. It?s best to get the process started as soon as possible because it can take a few months.

3) University Degree

You need to also provide original documentation of a university degree and transcripts. As an aside for American's. In some parts of the world there are High Schools that are known as Colleges. You need to be careful to not be disqualified for this reason.

When you have all of your documentation in order you will be able to find work teaching English as a Second Language.

I received my TESOL certification because that is what the principle had done. I also took the course here in Vietnam. There are many courses all over the world. I could have taken it in Houston Texas, USA, but it was more expensive and the living expenses for one month was much higher than staying with my brother-in-law in Ho Chi Minh City.

Now all you have to do is to be able to find, separate and qualify the good and bad teaching jobs when you are in your search. Once you understand how to search for these positions and understand the pay scales, you can search for decent positions.

How to Pair Wine with Brunch

This time of the year, it?s all about the light. Sunlight is streaming through our windows again, the air smells like flowers, and Mother?s Day is just around the corner: It?s brunch season.?When planning the meal, I tend to favor the ?unch? over the ?br.? That is, the savory over the sweet, as it makes for much better wine pairings. But what kind of wine?

?

While Champagne is obvious, don?t dwell on the mimosa?straight, dry sparklers are better with food. All styles work well, but especially beautiful at brunch is ros? Champagne, like the Alfred Gratien. The little touch of red-berry pink gives the wine a roundness and fruitiness that makes it a snap with mixed berries (a brunch staple).

?

Egg dishes often make the centerpiece of brunch, which is fortunate for those of us who love white wine, because the two are infallibly fantastic together. The exact type of white wine you serve should be determined by what you mix with the eggs. With cheddar and broccoli, as in Suzanne Goin?s Mother?s Day brunch menu, I?d love to have a Sauvignon Blanc (especially if the cheddar is sharp). Its great acidity and zingy herbal flavors will bring brightness and punch. On the other hand, if your egg dish has mushrooms, there?s a great opportunity to drink Chardonnay. The varietal?s rounded body and softer flavor pair beautifully with both eggs and mushrooms.

?

For heavier dishes involving vegetables, pork or poultry I still love keeping the wine light. With their herb and berry inflections, dry ros?s are great. They?ll fare beautifully, for instance, with Goins? sausage patties or farro salad.

?

Just remember: we know it?s brunch season because our days are now filled with light. Keep your brunch wines light and bright as well, and you?ll have great pairings.

?

Inspired? Make sure to visit Williams-Sonoma Wine for hand-picked wine selections, and great Mother?s Day Gifts.

Crisis proves a curse for Greece's Orthodox Church

ATHENS (Reuters) - Close links between the Greek state and the Orthodox Church are turning from a blessing for the clergy into a curse as the debt-laden government struggles to fund the ancient institution, just as impoverished Greeks need its charitable work most.

Starved of money as the state makes huge spending cuts, the deeply conservative church which grew from one of the earliest centers of Christianity is seeking new sources of funds.

But despite a new spirit of enterprise, such as at one monastery which wants to build a solar energy farm, numbers of priests are dwindling, those that remain are suffering pay cuts, and the church is fighting to keep soup kitchens open as unemployment soars and poverty deepens.

"The tills are empty and the system is collapsing," said Ignatios Stavropoulos, a modernizing priest who has his own page on LinkedIn, a social website for professionals.

Under a 60-year-old treaty, the state agreed to pay priests' salaries in exchange for large amount of church property, including land. But this means more than 10,000 priests are now on the government payroll, putting a 190 million euro ($250 million) annual burden on the country's overstretched budget.

Under the terms of an international bailout that saved Greece from bankruptcy, the government is cutting pay which for a typical parish priest is about 1,000 euros a month. Athens will also fund only one new priest to replace every 10 who retire or die, causing shortages in remote parishes during a deep recession when the flock most needs help.

In the cities, the church has stripped operations to the bone to save money for the soup kitchens and charities it runs for the growing army of the homeless and the unemployed.

Unlike in some European nations to the north where the influence of religion is dwindling, the church plays a leading role in the life of the Greece.

Long-bearded priests, dressed in flowing black robes, are a common sight on the country's streets and the Orthodox faith is recognized by the constitution as the official religion. When a new government was sworn in last year, the Archbishop of Athens blessed the prime minister and cabinet in a colorful ceremony.

According to opinion polls, about 80 percent of respondents believe in God. This makes Greeks among Europe's strongest Christians, although many are infrequent church-goers.

MIXED FEELINGS

In a country where private charities and volunteering remain embryonic, the main burden of helping the destitute and downtrodden falls on church shoulders.

But attitudes towards the church are mixed and it often draws criticism for being too close to the state.

Many citizens believe it still owns too much property, pays too little in taxes, and generally fails to contribute its fair share as ordinary Greeks' tax bills soar under the austerity demanded by the country's bailout from the EU and IMF.

The church dismisses such notions. "It's a myth that we're drowning in money," said Father Irinaios Laftsis, a priest in the northern diocese of Alexandroupolis.

Over the past decades the church has transferred 96 percent of its property to the state. It also paid 12.6 million euros in taxes in 2011, it said last month, stressing that the church was treated no differently from any other non-profit organization.

To cover the shortage of priests, some bishops are permitting laymen to take services. These volunteers receive no state wages and don't wear the characteristic vestments.

For instance, a retired army officer recently started holding mass at Avantas, a village close to the eastern border with Turkey, said Father Irinaios. "Priests in small villages retire or pass away and there is nobody to replace them," he said. "We are going to have a huge problem."

The church is already slashing its operating expenses to cope with the rising costs of its social work. Last year, it spent almost 96 million euros on the 700-odd charities it runs.

"The crisis does not only affect our charities' functioning, it also threatens their very existence," Bishop Efstathios of Sparta said earlier this month. State pension funds had stopped paying contributions to the charities he runs for almost a year, he complained.

Building or restoration work on churches, some home to ancient frescoes and ikons, has often ground to a halt while many are not properly heated during the harsh Greek winter to cut back on fuel expenses.

Economies are being made at all levels. Church orders for candles dropped 40 percent this Easter season, a religious items merchant in the southern province of Arcadia told Reuters.

OFF THE AIR

In February, the church briefly took its 23-year-old, cash-strapped radio station off the air, depriving listeners of the daily mix of sermons and cultural programs.

Spreading poverty is making matters even worse. Austerity-pinched believers are cutting down on private donations while businesses are going belly up, depriving the church of rental income and swelling the queues in its soup kitchens.

"Needs are increasing while resources are falling," said Father Vassileios Hatzavas, who runs the Athens Archbishopric's poor relief fund.

As Greek unemployment soars to record levels, soup kitchen rations more than doubled in Athens last year to about 10,000 a day, not counting about 3,000 food packages sent to families each month, Hatzavas said.

As the government tightens its purse strings, the clergy are increasingly looking to alternative revenue sources.

Short of cash and with much of its still abundant real estate tied up in ownership disputes, the church is seeking cooperation with municipalities, the army or private business to develop sites, Hatzavas said.

For the first time, the church sent an official delegation last month to a religious tourism fair in Russia, the world's biggest Christian Orthodox country and a major tourism target. Also, Penteli monastery outside Athens is planning to build a solar park to tap into subsidies for renewable energy producers.

Some priests may have gone too far in their fund-raising zeal, such as Efraim, abbot of the 1,000-year-old Vatopedi monastery.

Efraim masterminded a scheme six years ago under which monks at the monastery on Mount Athos, a independent Orthodox peninsular enclave, persuaded government officials to exchange cheap farmland for prime Athens real estate.

Efraim has been charged with a fraudulent deal which prosecutors say cost the state tens of millions of euros.

Notwithstanding the Vatopedi affair, the crisis is offering the church a chance to reduce its financial dependence on the state via legitimate business enterprises, as other churches did decades ago.

"It's a matter of survival for the Church," Stavropoulos said. ($1 = 0.7621 euros)

(AP) ? Anti-government protesters flooded a main highway in a march stretching for miles and security forces fired tear gas in breakaway clashes Friday as Bahrain's leaders struggled to contain opposition anger while under the world's spotlight as the island nation hosts the Formula One Grand Prix.

The government allowed the massive demonstration in an apparent bid to avoid the hit-and-run street battles that are the hallmark of the Gulf nation's 14-month uprising ? and an embarrassing spectacle for Bahrain's Western-backed rulers as F1 teams prepare for Sunday's race.

But violence flared as small groups in the march peeled away from the route to challenge riot police, who answered with volleys of tear gas and stun grenades. Some protesters sought refuge in a mall and nearby shops about 20 kilometers (12 miles) north of the Formula One track, where practice runs took place and Bahrain's crown prince vowed the country's premier international event would go ahead.

Last year, a wave of anti-government protests by the island's Shiite majority and a crackdown by the Sunni rulers forced organizers to cancel the 2011 Bahrain GP. At least 50 people have been killed since the start of Bahrain's uprising ? the longest-running in the Arab Spring ? which seeks a greater political voice for Shiites and to weaken the near monopoly of the Sunni dynasty that has ruled for more than 200 years.

"We demand democracy" and "Down, Down Hamad," chanted some of the tens of thousands of opposition supporters in reference to King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, as they massed on the main highway leading out of the capital, Manama. Bahrain's monarchy is the main backer of the F1 race, and the crown prince owns rights to the event.

Hours before the march, Bahrain's most senior Shiite cleric, Sheik Isa Qassim, delivered a strongly worded sermon that denounced authorities for making dozens of arrests of suspected dissidents in recent weeks. He called the intensified crackdowns before the F1 event "as if we are entering a war."

Bahrain's rulers lobbied hard to stage this year's Grand Prix as part of attempts to portray stability in the strategic kingdom, which is home to the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet. On the opposite side, rights groups and others campaigned to keep the race away, citing the relentless pressures by security forces and the imprisonment of opposition figures ? including a Shiite political activist on a more than a two-month-long hunger strike.

The U.S.-based group Physicians for Human Rights, also said it was concerned about the near daily use of tear gas in Bahrain, including in crowded urban areas and homes, and its possible long-term health consequences, including increased rates of miscarriages and birth defects.

"Despite promises of reform since our investigation into the Kingdom last year, the Government's excessive use of force has only increased," said the group's deputy director, Richard Sollom.

The hacking collective Anonymous, meanwhile, claimed responsibility for a denial-of-service attack on the official Formula One website in protest over the running of the Bahrain Grand Prix this weekend. Such web attacks work by overwhelming a site with bogus traffic.

Shiites account for about 70 percent of Bahrain's population of just over half a million people, but claim they face widespread discrimination and lack opportunities granted to the Sunni minority. The country's leaders have offered some reforms, but the opposition says they fall short of Shiite demands for a greater voice in the country's affairs and an elected government.

The unrest has put Washington into an awkward position. U.S. officials have called for efforts to reopen political dialogue in Bahrain, but are careful not to press too hard against the nation's leadership and possibly jeopardize its important military ties.

In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland expressed the Obama administration's concern about "the increase in violence in Bahrain, especially leading up to the Formula 1 race."

"These are unproductive, unhelpful acts in building the kind of meaningful trust and reconciliation that is needed in Bahrain," Nuland told reporters. "We're calling for, again, Bahraini government respect for universal human rights and demonstrators' restraint in ensuring that they are peaceful."

Bahrian's crown prince, Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, visited the track Friday and rejected any suggestion that the race should be scrapped.

"I think canceling the race just empowers extremists," he said. "For those of us trying to navigate a way out of this political problem, having the race allows us ... to celebrate our nation as an idea that is positive, not one that is divisive."

Clashes take place nearly every day with demonstrators hurling firebombs and riot police responding with tear gas and sometimes firing birdshot. The main Shiite political group, Al Wefaq, says at least 50 people have been injured in the past two days when security forces fired pellets to disperse protesters.

Additional security forces deployed this week, setting up checkpoints Friday on roads leading to the Bahrain International Circuit and increasing their presence across Manama.

The rulers have depicted the race ? expected to draw a worldwide TV audience of about 100 million in 187 countries ? as an event that will put the divided society on the path of reconciliation.

"I genuinely believe this race is a force for good, it unites many people from many different religious backgrounds, sects and ethnicities," said the crown prince.

In the past weeks, however, much of the protesters' anger has been directed at the crown prince, who is also the commander of the kingdom's armed forces, which the opposition supporters say have been enforcing the crackdown.

Last year, Salman was tasked to lead a national dialogue aimed at reconciliation between Shiite and Sunnis. The talks broke down without any compromise and have not yet resumed.

In Iraq, hard-line Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, denounced Bahrain for staging the grand prix while "blood is being shed" on the island. Al-Sadr also condemned the F1 teams for racing, saying their presence in Bahrain gives "support for injustices and the killings."

As a majority Shiite country, Iraq has backed Bahrain's Shiite-led protests.

Sarah Palin "Checked Out" By Secret Service Agent Caught in Scandal, Report Reveals

Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin is weighing in on the recent Secret Service scandal after it was revealed that one of the accused agents, David Chaney, was "checking her out" on assignment protecting then-VP candidate Palin in 2008.

That's just disturbing. Not as disturbing as the fact that Sarah Palin was once close enough to the presidency that she warranted Secret Service detail, but still. Bad taste.

Seriously, though. This is a real story.

Palin Facebook post

David Chaney, one of the agents implicated in the Colombia prostitution fiasco, wrote on Facebook of Sarah Palin that he was "checking her out" while assigned to protect the vice presidential candidate during the 2008 campaign.

He posted a photo of Palin with him looking on from the background. Under the photo, he wrote: "I was really checking her out, if you know what i (sic) mean?"

Palin, on Fox News, shot back: "Well, check this out, buddy - you're fired!"

She added that the scandal is "a symptom of government run amok" and that she hopes Chaney is in the doghouse, getting in a dig at President Obama's dog-eating "scandal":

This Philips Wake-Up Light Is Your The-Dawn-Is-Your-Pawn Deal of the Day [Dealzmodo]

Early mornings are wonderful. Waking up to the warm sun gently rising, reaching out to shine on my room. The birds perched outside my window, singing delicate songs as I rise to greet a new day. It's all pretty magical—occasionally. To be honest, I really don't want to wake up that early. The sun seriously needs to piss off. And those birds? Atonal. Hate 'em. But now I have the Philips Wake-Up Light, and I control the sunrise. You see, the Wake-Up Light simulates a rising sun, gradually getting brighter and playing gentle nature noises at whatever time I want. Hey heliocentric orbit! You sir, can go to hell. More »

ChevronWP7 officially closes up shop for good, hands out App Hub memberships

ChevronWP7 officially closes up shop for good
We were a tad disappointed when ChevronWP7 stopped handing out unlock token for Windows Phones in early January, only two months after launching. But, we held out hope that one day the shop might reopen its doors and once again offer a cheap option to those of us that wish to free our WP7 devices from Microsoft's shackles. Sadly, that dream is officially dead, as ChevronWP7 has been shuttered for good. On the plus side, current customers will be rewarded with a one-year membership to Microsoft's App Hub -- currently the only legit way to unlock your Windows Phone. So, we're sad to see ChevronWP7 go but, if you were lucky enough to score a token before the 10,000 available sold out, you got a pretty sweet deal in paying $9 for a $99 App Hub membership. Hit up the source link for full details.

[Thanks, Joe]

The best App Store alternatives to Apple?s missing clock, voice recording, weather, calculator, and stock apps for ipad

When Steve Jobs introduced the very first iPad, one of his big statements was that the 75 million iPhone users in the world already knew how to use it. Well, many of those users were suprised to discover that four of the built-in apps that they had grown to love on their iPhone were missing on their iPad. Namely, Clock, Voice Memos, Weather, Calculator and Stocks. Rumor has it Apple didn't think those apps would scale to look good on the bigger iPad screen. Fortunately, many great developers have filled that void and proven that, not only can these apps look good on the iPad. They can look great.

The Benefits of Home Design Services and Room Space Planning ...

By using the services of home design and space planning of space that you can design your home the way you want and are equipped with items that will suit any room in your home. For economic reasons, most people will not buy all the furniture at once, but gradually develop over time until they are satisfied with the final result. Even so, there remains a need to do with the overall plan in mind, because without it you can end up with the mishmash of styles, and we think you might like at the time, but appears to users as to what real ? a collection of individual pieces fit.

  • Looking for design services online home

It is best to use a professional design service rather than doing it yourself. The best type of service to use is offered by furniture retailers. You can save considerable time and effort to use an online company that can provide service planning, and then provide the necessary furniture for the resulting plan. Internet is hard to beat when you need to hunt and to give not only a good opportunity to find a suitable house design service, but can also provide furniture is ideal to meet your plan. If you can find an online furniture store that has a link to a number of manufacturers involved, then you?re sure to find what you are looking for. Not only that, but if you add to your plan from time to time, you will need each room according regardless of when they were purchased. By combining the two: the home design services and furniture retailers, suppliers will be able to ensure that everything matches, even if you buy more than one producer in your vendor list. There will be a ?mismatch. Not

Spatial planning room allows you to make best use of available space for you. It is far better to plan your room before buying all the furniture, then visit a furniture store you are armed with a list of items you need and the optimum size. Some elements of spatial planning involves space how to make the most of a small living, or how to ask the grouping of furniture for a larger room. This is not just about choosing the furniture itself, but also the space between the groups. For example, the ideal space between the sofa and coffee table is about 15 to 18 inches. Circulation space depending on the room, although for large venues, the main traffic routes across the room must be in the range of 3 feet, with half for smaller roads.

When choosing furniture for your home, make sure it all blends together. You do not want a light oak mixed with dark wood like mahogany, walnut or teak. To the barricades? French rally behind far-left candidate's fighting words

Jean Luc M?lenchon has suddenly become the No. 3 French presidential candidate, whipping up crowds with his robust leftist rhetoric in a tough election season.

To the barricades, citizens: Jean Luc M?lenchon is on the rise, claiming the authentic voice of the old French Revolution in upcoming elections.

But the French presidential candidate is something new: a far-left nationalist who can whip up a crowd. He shakes his fists, waves the red flag, calls for a ?civic insurrection? among citizens, scorns elites, hates capitalism ? and has suddenly become the No. 3 candidate in this somewhat fractious and tortured election season.

Police this week continued high-profile roundups of suspected Islamic radicals after the shock of a Toulouse attacker who killed soldiers and Jewish children and claimed to be linked to Al Qaeda. President Nicolas Sarkozy and much of the French media have shifted the subject of the elections to Muslims and foreigners.

But a new and serious dynamic in the race is now playing out on the vast French left, which includes about half of voters. Behind the M?lenchon phenomenon is a sizable bloc of urban working class and middle class voters, uncommitted, worried about jobs, housing, and pensions, and less fixated on the identity politics of Mr. Sarkozy and far-right candidate Marine Le Pen.? Mr. M?lenchon's rhetoric also shows that in France, ?red meat? issues of social justice on the left continue to persist.

?M?lenchon has been able to federate the hard left, the Trotskyites, the communist party, a lot of smaller parties, unions, public service workers?. Greens and ecologists,? says Arun Kapil, a political scientist at Catholic University in Paris. ?And with [Socialist candidate Fran?ois] Hollande leading an uninspiring campaign, there?s been a snowball effect around [M?lenchon.]?

M?lenchon, a colorful radical populist, a former communist, and former Socialist minister who rides public transport in Paris, is playing on the latent revolutionary sentiments of the Republic, analysts say.

Some moderate leftists whisper that he is ?scary,? as he has defended the Chinese Cultural Revolution and is avowedly anti-European Union.

M?lenchon recently out-polled Ms. Le Pen of the National Front, who wants to deport foreigners and recreate French pride and nationalism.

"We have been the most valiant defenders of fellowship. France has won a huge victory: the serial killer achieved nothing, and neither did the jackals of the National Front," M?lenchon said at a Lille rally of 20,000 two days ago as polls show his popularity has doubled in the past three weeks.

While Sarkozy is fighting to capture the far-right voter from Le Pen, whipping up frenzy about halal meat (prepared according to Muslim standards) and banning or deporting Muslim clerics, Mr. M?lenchon has been driving all over the voting territory of the Socialist front-runner Fran?ois Hollande, who has been, like a modest turtle, quietly nosing his way to the election finish line with a moderate center-left platform.

M?lenchon is backed by the Communist Party, which for the first time in three decades is not running a candidate, and he calls for a cap on salaries over 350,000 euros, wants France out of Afghanistan if not NATO, and has voted against further French participation in the European Union.

A day before the Toulouse shooting, M?lenchon?s rally at the symbolic Bastille in Paris saw 100,000 enthusiasts, more than Sarkozy has achieved, and forced the small far-left party to take out loans to hire security protection to keep their rallies safe.

"The river has broken its banks and no matter what happens, the flood isn?t going to recede any time soon,? M?lenchon said, speaking of new enthusiasms on the? left.

French elections take place in two rounds, April 22 and May 5. Whereas Mr. Hollande, who is running a projected 8 to 9 points ahead of Sarkozy in the crucial second round runoff, recently said he was not ?dangerous?? ? a slap at a perception of Sarkozy among many French ? M?lenchon unashamedly says, "It?s?we?who are dangerous" as activists and tough social critics of the established mainstream parties. He never fails to poke at Hollande, calling on him to stand up for true Socialist ideals.

Hollande in recent days unveiled his Socialist platform, which, in a presumed nod to the far left, called for a 75 percent tax on those making more than a million euros a year. He says that, if elected, he will, in the first eight weeks of office, cut political leaders? salaries up to 30 percent, put a freeze on fuel prices, and further help the parents of schoolchildren. He has also said he will hire 60,000 new teachers, though has not shown how the financing for the plan will work.

Mr. Kapil, the political scientist, says enthusiasm for M?lenchon has spiked because his voters know Hollande will win in the first round. ?So they are secure. About 90 percent of M?lenchon?s voters will vote for Hollande in round two.?

The Relationship Room with Dr. Scales: Communication Breakdown?

Dr. Scales once again opens up her Relationship Room to discuss the nature of "true love" and the purpose of monogamy.

*Editor's Note: Dr. Scales welcomes questions from people of all walks of life and love. You can send your questions to her whenever you like. As she is a member of the medical profession, she honors, with the utmost respect, the doctor-patient confidentiality agreement. And she's a hell of a gal besides.
Howdy folks! It?s a glorious day here in New York City (I don?t actually live there, I just get free access to a fantastic website called www.weather.com?one of the many perks of being an accredited medical professional I guess) and I?m feeling abnormally happy. The sun is shining, I?m feeling cute (YOU MUST CLICK ON THIS LINK ? if you missed your chance before, you can do so here and here), and, well, let?s just say me and this baby have one thing in common. Before I delve any further into this week?s jambalaya of relationship advice, I have been asked (more like forced, amiright?) by my lawyer, Fay Callagh?un-officially known as the ?top condiment lawyer on both the east and west coasts,? to post the following statement before dishing out any further professionally-driven-advice:?Any writings herein are provided for informational purposes only and do not constitute professional medical advice. ?Any opinions expressed are solely those of the writer, and no readers or recipients of the blog's contents should act or refrain from acting on the basis of any content included in the site without the appropriate medical or other professional advice on the particular facts and circumstances at issue.?Take that state medical licensing board! Oh, I bet you thought you had me this time but I win again. Judge, won?t you throw the book at this pirate (there?s a point here I swear)!?Dearest Dr. Scales,

I gather just from the tenor of your previous answers that you are in a committed relationship (or believe in their ostensible value) and so I can already guess what the answer to these questions will be. Nevertheless, it seems to me that nothing in life is eternal and, least of all, love. Indeed, true, fiery love seems to be the most fleeting of all human emotions. Furthermore, monogamy seems not only torturous and draconian in nature but also deeply impractical in age when people can easily live past 90 and women are no longer expected to remain virginal while men play the field. Thus, do you believe love is eternal or even exists and do you think monogamy is something to strive for or something we do largely based on fear and the need to possess?

I very much appreciate your time and consideration in this matter.

Sincerely,

Doubting Thomas

Well, Doubting Thomas, you?ve certainly made me doubt myself here. This question knocked me on my ass?literally?and it took me a minute to get back up and catch my breath. I don?t mean this in a bad way, by any means?[real thought: unless you consider me second-guessing my past relationships, current relationships, friends? relationships, friends of friends? relationship, oh and my profession, too]?yeah, not in a bad way at all?Really, though, I was kidding before. Your question is both valid and, I sheepishly admit, a little difficult for me to answer?yes, you caught me. Lay down the red carpet, throw on the cuffs?I, Kerri Scales, M.D., am in a committed relationship. And inside that committed relationship, I am in love. So, in short, yes I believe in love and though I am not in a position to say that monogamy is something to strive for (did you even read what my lawyer with a degree from a highly accredited slaw school said? Damn Gina!) but I do think it is worth aiming for and worth maintaining. Now, I have a slight inclination to assume that you are confusing that fleeting feeling of ?fiery love? with that of lust. Kind of like when people confuse their own ?accidental? pregnancy with weight gain from ?the munchies? and subsequently end up with kids like this one. But love is not lust and lust is not love but the two are not mutually exclusive. I guess my point here is that love exists and monogamy can happen?but it is not that bullshit, cookie cutter, fairytale, ?knight in shining armor? crap you see in shit like Pretty Woman and Silence of The Lambs (what?). ?It is something people work for, something people fight for, and something that can significantly impact people?s lives for the better ?and, well, sometimes for the worse.

No, it?s not easy?but fuck it, what in life is easy? Reap what you sow, my little doubter. Reap what you sow. Love and monogamy?in their most true and honest form? are the outcome of hard work and determination from two flawed individuals who love each other enough to work on their flaws together and work to find ways to maneuver their way through them so they can learn, together, how to deal with them and move forward with nuthin? but love, baby.

I?ll spare you the details of my personal work life and just get to the point: you can e-mail me here (and only there) with any questions, comments, concerns, inquiries, or idiosyncrasies. First person to stump me wins $100 in Puddles of Myself money?this stuff works miracles people.

'Boom' town gets quake sensors, and T-shirts

Scientists say a series of earthquakes are behind the mysterious booms plaguing Clintonville, Wisconsin, but some locals aren't so sure. WTMJ's Annie Scholz reports.

By Miguel Llanos, msnbc.com

When the town of?Clintonville, Wis., declared that mysterious booms?scaring residents were tied to small tremors, they didn't convince everyone --?not even every?quake scientist. So to be sure,?they?had the sound analyzed (click to hear it)?and?brought in seismic sensors.

Moreover, what with all the media attention, they've even decided to make the most of their celebrity moment by selling "I Survived the 1.5" (as in earthquake magnitude) T-shirts.

So what are the sensors showing?

"We did record an earthquake Thursday night," Greg Waite, a Michigan Technological University geologist told msnbc.com on Monday.?"It was very small, less than magnitude 0.5," he said, but "there were several calls to the authorities in Clintonville at about that time reporting booming sounds."

City Administrator Lisa Kuss told msnbc.com that residents continue to be concerned?"because we keep having smaller events."

On March 22, Kuss declared "the mystery is solved" after the U.S. Geological Survey detected a 1.5-magnitude tremor at 12:16 a.m. on March 20 in Clintonville, population 4,500.

"In other places in the United States, a 1.5 earthquake would not be felt," she said a town meeting. "But the type of rock Wisconsin has transmits seismic energy very well."

Listen to audio of?a March 24?'boom'
Town map of where booms were reported heard

Some residents refuse to believe the booms are from the 1.5-magnitude?quake and smaller tremors, and they have some scientific support.

Paul Caruso, a USGS scientist,?noted that while earthquakes can trigger an underground sonic boom, he didn't think the?recent quake?was large enough to do that.

"To be honest, I'm skeptical that there'd be a sound report associated with such a small earthquake, but it's possible," he told The Associated said shortly after the March 20 quake was detected.

Last Thursday, four seismometers and four infrasound sensors were installed to see if the sounds can be tied definitively?to tremors.

"The USGS will issue authoritative earthquake location and magnitude information for all future earthquakes," Waite said. "If the swarm continues, I hope to be able to say something about why?they are occurring and how they are generating audible sound."

Clintonville, for its part, hopes to make a little "civic improvement" cash out of its saga. Kuss?estimated that by Monday morning some?500 T-shirts?had been ordered, some even from out of state. The town clears about $5 a shirt.

"The profits from these shirts will be used to beautify or enhance something in our City as determined by the Mayor at a later date," the town says on its website. "This is not meant to make light of a serious situation but to show that we, as a community, came together to get through the events."
