June is Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat Month! | Vet Depot Blog

The ASPCA has declared June as Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat Month to raise awareness for the millions of cats across the country in need of a forever home. One in twenty dogs and cats in the United States ends up in a shelter. Sadly, 70% of cats that enter a shelter are euthanized due to overpopulation.

To help support Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat Month, VetDepot has released a Pet Overpopulation Infographic. Spaying and neutering is the number one way to fight overpopulation. Despite the overwhelming number of pets that end up in shelters, 35% of pet owners still opt to not ?fix? their pet.

Spaying or neutering your pets, choosing to adopt instead of buy, volunteering at or donating to a local animal shelter, and educating others about pet overpopulation are all great ways to participate in Adopt-A-Shelter-Pet Month! ?So, spread the word about pet overpopulation by sharing the infographic!

Porsche Debuts Cayenne GTS In Leipzig

Posted: 01 Jun 2012 12:30 PM PDT

Klaus Zellmer, CEO of Porsche Germany, introduces the new Cayenne GTS

The Leipzig Auto Show, known as Automobil International (AMI), may lack the prestige of a Paris Motor Show or a Frankfurt Auto Show, but it's still a key event for Porsche. After all, Porsche's factory in Leipzig builds the Cayenne SUV, and is in the midst of a major expansion to begin building the upcoming Macan SUV. In other words, Porsche wants to make a statement that Leipzig, both as a city and as a show, is important to Porsche.

Enter the Porsche Cayenne GTS, which is being debuted at this week's AMI. Like other GTS models, it's meant to bridge the gap between entry level vehicles and more performance-oriented (and pricier) options. In keeping with GTS tradition, the Cayenne GTS gets a 4.8-liter V-8 engine rated at 420 horsepower (20 horsepower more than the Cayenne S), mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Outside, the Cayenne GTS borrows styling cues from the Cayenne Turbo, including a front fascia with large cooling ducts, side skirts, wider fender flares and a twin-wing roof spoiler. In other words, the Cayenne GTS looks like a Cayenne Turbo, but costs significantly less money.

There's no word yet on pricing or when we?ll see the Cayenne GTS stateside, but we'd say within six months after its European launch. The Cayenne sells well here, and offering a "just right" in-between model will help Porsche to grow sales in the U.S. market.

?Urban Outlaw? Documents The World?s Most Unlikely Porsche 911 Collector: Video

Magnus Walker, Porsche collector

When we say the phrase "collector of Porsche 911s," what comes to mind? Clearly, there's wealth involved, so it's logical to expect a certain level of careful grooming and attire; after all, it's easy to upset other members of the tennis club if your appearance isn't as they expect.

Magnus Walker, part of the pair behind Serious Clothing, isn't your stereotypical Porsche collector. At first glance, he looks more like a hardcore biker or a long-time rock -band roadie than a classic car collector and fashion designer. In fact, with his weathered appearance, chest-length beard and dreadlocked hair, Walker is the kind of guy that most people would cross the street to avoid running into, especially late at night.

Walker is also a very serious collector of early Porsche 911s, with a goal of owning one example of each model built between 1964 and 1973. So far, he's got every year covered through 1972, and clearly knows his way around a workshop.

The video below, found on Autoblog, is a short trailer for an upcoming film by Tamir Moscovici entitled "Urban Outlaw." We'll admit to being captivated by Walker's story, so we'll be sure to follow up when the film is released.

Time Management Tips - 3 Ways to Realign Your Energy to ...

Article Directory :: Self-Improvement/Motivation Articles

Time management tips can help you create a framework to increase your energy, your productivity and profitability. Do you feel weighed down by daily demands? Perhaps you have lost sight of how your daily choices connect to meaningful life goals. It can be easy to get caught up in routines. Spontaneity decreases, and you feel you "have to" go through the motions. All too often, this leads to resentment and procrastination.

But by orchestrating your time choices with your deepest values, you can dramatically shift your outlook and boost your personal productivity, too. I call this value-driven time management, or heart-based time management. It brings much-needed harmony to busy lives.

Think of how you feel at a concert as the musicians tune up. Notes clash aimlessly, and you shift restlessly in your seat. Next, recall the surge of excitement that courses through you as the musicians launch into a powerful and unified performance! Which would you rather have your day feel like? Which is most likely to yield the rewards that your efforts deserve?

Here are 3 easy, dependable ways to unify your energies at the onset of the day. Used in combination with an effective To Do List, especially a Double Column Template, these 3 guidelines will help you build focus, momentum and success.

3 Guidelines To Revitalize Your Schedule

Prepare for this exercise by creating a To Do List or Double Column Template for the day. Then, next to each activity, briefly describe what value it supports. For example, preparing a financial analysis may help you coordinate your business strategies. Shopping for groceries can help you keep plenty of healthy food on hand. Next, look at the big picture. Which of your values is well supported? Which needs more attention? The following 3 tips will help you use this overview to channel your energy, your enthusiasm and your productivity.

1. Realign: Create A Snapshot Of Where You Deprive Yourself.

Don't be surprised if your time choices reveal where you experience the greatest sense of "disconnect" in your life. Quite often, people describe that they are not supporting central values with the time needed to promote them! The more directly you correlate the areas of your life that aren't working with the amount and quality of time you allocate (or don't!), the more motivated you become to revise your time choices accordingly.

2. Revitalize: Fully Own Your Choices.

It pays you - over and over, to give yourself credit.

Examine which values you support with your present time choices. This exercise may help you dignify choices you currently dismiss as obligatory. How much energy do you misuse by grumbling over tasks you "have to" do? That's energy you can redirect to validating yourself for the discipline you have developed, and for your follow-through. An additional benefit: claiming your productive time choices as intentional may help you break the procrastination habit!

Then again, you may discover that some habitual pastimes reflect values that don't truly serve you. In that case, what values would you rather fund with your time?

3. Analyze: Budget Your Time To Align With Your Values.

Now's the time to draw some broader conclusions. How closely do your values and your time choices match up overall? Do big outlays of energy yield only small benefits, while prominent projects claim only insignificant slivers of time? You have the power to make the changes that will reward you.

Time is the currency of your life. The more closely you identify with the benefits your values can bring you, the more consistently you will direct your time and energy where they need to go.

So, do yourself a favor... conduct this review as often as necessary. And each morning, ask yourself with warmth and genuine curiosity - how can you use your time most effectively today?

Orange San Diego revealed: Intel-powered phone to reach UK on June 6th for ?200

Orange San Diego gets UK reveal, name change

Orange took its time to decide, but now it's settled. The first European Intel-equipped smartphone is the San Diego, replacing the Santa Clara codename assigned to it since February's Mobile World Congress. It will launch on pay-as-you-go at £200, including £10 of credit -- although Orange tell us this will be an introductory price. On contract, prices will start at £15.50 per month for two years and Brits will be able to pick one up from June 6th. We're getting the full run-through from Orange UK and Intel, but we're itching to run our new benchmarks on the Medfield phone as soon as they let us at it. And that pesky Gingerbread OS? We've been told to expect Ice Cream Sandwich closer to the end of Q3. But with just the single carrier, we're hoping testing time could be shaved off significantly.

Soon you can have lab-grown, stingray shoes at $1,800 a pop

19 hrs.

If you?ve got a shoe fetish, a spare $1,800?and don?t mind skin from genetically engineered stingrays on your feet, then head on over to Rayfish.com and order yourself a truly unique pair of shoes.

Visitors to the company?s website can mix and match patterns from the fish and the company will select coloration and patterning genes to grow you a transgenic stingray with your custom design.

?As the ray grows and matures, it expresses the predetermined patterns on its skin,? the company explains on its website.?

The fish grow in an aquaculture facility. Once harvested, workers at a factory in Chon Buri, Thailand, stitch together your shoes, including thick laces and sturdy soles.

?With their unparalleled degree of customization ? no two pairs are alike, even at a genetic level ? these shoes should appeal to a diverse group of sneaker lovers,? RayFish.com explains in a press release.

The company?s CEO, Raymond Ong, calls the shoes the ?world?s first bio-customized sneakers.

General production is slated to begin in late 2012, with shoes costing approximately $1,800, depending on shoe size and the complexity of the design.?

For those who can?t wait, the company is hosting a design contest to win a free pair and is also accepting a limited number of orders, presumably closer to the current production cost of between $14,800 and $16,200.

While these shoes could appeal to shoe lovers, if we get comfortable designing our clothes with transgenic stingrays, does that bring us closer to designing our own babies?

Social Business: What Are Companies Really Doing? | Preface

Report Home | Next Chapter ?

The rapid adoption of technology-based social networking has been transforming politics and social norms on a global scale for the past decade. Will social networking and social software have a similarly transformative effect on business? Are they already doing so? What kinds of enterprises are benefiting the most? And how are they benefiting?

To answer these questions, MIT Sloan Management Review and Deloitte1 conducted a survey of managers from companies in 115 countries and 24 industries. We had 3,478 respondents to our questionnaire. They represented a wide range of management roles (from coordinators to board directors), functional areas and business sizes.

We supplemented the analysis of our survey results with interviews with thought leaders and business executives, as well as a review of recent research on social business. Our in-depth interviews included conversations with senior managers from companies at the cutting edge of social business practice, including McDonald?s, IBM, Salesforce.com, SAP and Yammer.

Although enterprises have only just begun to embrace social business, many leaders ? especially in the media and technology industries ? are enthusiastic about its value. Others are more cautious but recognize its potential a few years out. Our survey points to marketing and innovation as key areas for capturing value, while our interviews suggest that operations and leadership stand to benefit as well. To capture this value, companies should consider taking steps to ensure that their leaders and culture are aligned with the new opportunities.

We conclude with considerations for how to put social business to work in your enterprise. Leaders need to recognize that social business:

  • Adds value far beyond marketing;
  • Needs leadership support to gain traction in the organization;
  • Can deliver benefits to leadership via strategic insight and strategic execution.

We hope that this report provides executives food for thought as they consider how to incorporate social business activities into their organization. For more about our work in social business, including exclusive in-depth interviews and additional feature articles, please see the online exploration in the Social Business area of MIT Sloan Management Review?s website and at Deloitte?s website.

3. Social media is how people get together virtually to accomplish outcomes. Social software is the set of tools that gives people in a social network the means for automation, virtualization, scale and abstraction. Social networks are formal descriptions of groups of people who congregate in a social medium.

4. Not all social business activities will produce mutually useful connections between individuals. In some cases, it may be beneficial to diminish certain connections between staff or with some customers. Further, the use of emergent communication and collaboration tools like Yammer may one day become part of the baseline. When that happens, using these tools may cease to qualify as a social business activity as we?re defining it, not because they are any less social but because they no longer ?amplify? connections.

19. Providing clear guidance about communications external to a business can be tricky, especially in regulated industries like health care and financial services. Too much guidance can put a damper on social business activities. ?If I ask an organization for their social media policy, and I get back a 50-page document,? says MIT?s Andrew McAfee, ?that might as well just say, we?d prefer it if you don?t use social media.? Even in unregulated industries, too much oversight can cast a shadow on innocent interactions. Babson College?s Keri Pearlson describes a recent meeting with a colleague and two representatives from a large technology firm. Her colleague tweeted that she and Pearlson were at a lunch meeting, naming the firm but not the individuals. When the representatives returned to work, the office was buzzing about who was speaking without authorization about the company. Staff had been monitoring information flows from Twitter about the company and had seen the tweet from Pearlson?s colleague.

West expels envoys over massacre of Syrian children

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Western powers expelled Syria's envoys on Tuesday in outrage at a massacre of 108 people, almost half of them children, and peace envoy Kofi Annan urged President Bashar al-Assad to halt the bloodshed as "a tipping point" had been reached.

The killings in the town of Houla drew a chorus of condemnation from around the world, with the United Nations saying entire families were killed in their homes on Friday, some by army tanks and others probably by pro-Assad militia.

"Bashar al-Assad is the murderer of his people," French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius told Le Monde. "He must relinquish power. The sooner the better."

U.S. State Department spokeswoman described an "absolutely indefensible, vile, despicable massacre against innocent children, women, shot at point blank range by regime thugs."

U.N. peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous, whose monitors are in Syria, contradicted the Assad's government assertion that the killings were carried out by terrorist gangs.

"Part of the victims had been killed by artillery shells, now that points ever so clearly to the responsibility of the government. Only the government has heavy weapons, has tanks, has howitzers," Ladsous told reporters, adding:

"But there are also victims from individual weapons, victims from knife wounds and that of course is less clear but probably points the way to the (pro-Assad) shabbihas, the local militia."

The United States, France, Britain, Canada, Germany, Italy, Spain, Australia and Bulgaria gave Syria's envoys hours or days to leave their capitals in a coordinated move meant to isolate Assad further diplomatically.

Some had already expelled ambassadors or downgraded ties and so, like Washington, ordered out less senior charges d'affaires.

Western countries that have called for Assad to step down hope the Houla killings will tip global opinion, notably that of Syria's main protector Russia, towards more effective action.

The killings have contributed to doubt about whether a peace plan backed by Annan, a former U.N. secretary general, has any chance of success. Some of Assad's opponents say Annan's plan is only making the situation worse by buying Assad time.

"WE ARE AT A TIPPING POINT"

Annan said that in his talks with the Syrian leader in Damascus he "conveyed in frank terms the grave concern of the international community about the violence in Syria, including the recent shocking events in Houla."

"We are at a tipping point. The Syrian people do not want the future to be one of bloodshed and division. Yet the killings continue and the abuses are still with us today."

More than 10,000 people have died in the uprising against Assad and a crackdown by his loyalists, which began in March last year as part of a wave of revolts across the Arab world.

Western leaders have loudly called for Assad to go for months, but have so far shown little appetite for the sort of armed intervention that toppled Libya's Muammar Gaddafi last year. Any suggestion that force might be threatened has been blocked at the U.N. Security Council by Moscow and Beijing.

French President Francois Hollande said armed intervention could not be ruled out, but only with Security Council support.

"Military intervention is not excluded, provided it is carried out under the auspices of international law, namely a Security Council resolution," he told France 2 TV. "It is down to myself and others to convince Russia and China, and also to find a solution which is not necessarily a military one."

White House spokesman Jay Carney said the United States had not taken any options - including military intervention - off the table, but believed armed action was not the right course at present because it would lead to greater carnage and chaos.

Moscow backed a non-binding U.N. Security Council text on Sunday criticizing the use of artillery and tanks in Houla, but has twice vetoed tougher resolutions. It has shown little sign of changing its stance this week.

Vladimir Chizhov, Moscow's envoy to the EU, criticized the Western expulsions of Syrian envoys: "I believe it rarely is conducive to maintaining dialogue with the other side."

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Moscow was "alarmed that some countries ... are starting to use this event as an excuse to put forth demands of the need for military action in an attempt to put pressure on the U.N. Security Council."

"We are troubled by the ceaseless attempts to frustrate Kofi Annan's peace plan."

Annan urged the armed opposition to cease violence but appealed first to the government, as the stronger party, to take "bold steps now - not tomorrow, now" by stopping all military operations and showing "maximum restraint".

The plan calls for the government to withdraw all heavy weapons from towns and cities, followed by a cessation of fighting and dialogue with the opposition, but has stalled at the first hurdle.

Assad's government denied having anything to do with the deaths in Houla, or even having heavy weapons in the area, despite the contrary evidence found by United Nations monitors.

Assad himself repeated to Annan Syria's line that "terrorist groups" - Syria's term for the rebels - were stepping up killings and kidnappings across the country.

Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad told reporters: "Syria has not committed a single violation of Annan's plan or the initial understanding between Syria and the United Nations.

"At the same time, the other party has not committed to a single point. This means that there is a decision by the armed groups and the opposition not to implement Annan's plan and to make it fail."

The estimated number of internally displaced Syrians has more than doubled to 500,000 since an April 12 ceasefire and the flow of refugees abroad has gathered pace again, U.N. officials said on Tuesday.

SPENT SHELLS AND TANK TRACKS

U.N. monitors found spent shells and fresh tank tracks in Houla, evidence of weaponry that Syria's lightly-armed rebels do not have in their arsenal.

But the U.N. human rights office in Geneva said the bulk of the 108 mostly civilian dead in Houla had been executed at close range. Survivors told U.N. investigators that the killers were pro-Assad "shabbiha" militiamen, who in the past have assaulted and intimidated hotbeds of opposition to Assad.

"What is very clear is that this was an absolutely abominable event that took place in Houla, and at least a substantial part of it were summary executions of civilians - women and children," said Rupert Colville, spokesman for the U.N. human rights office in Geneva.

He said 49 children and 32 women were among the dead. "At this point, it looks like entire families were shot in their houses."

The report was at odds with a note sent by Syria to the Security Council that said: "Not a single tank entered the region and the Syrian army was in a state of self-defense ...

"The terrorist armed groups ... entered with the purpose of killing and the best proof of that is the killing by knives, which is the signature of terrorist groups who massacre according to the Islamist way."

Gruesome video footage distributed by opposition activists has helped to shake world opinion out of growing indifference to a conflict in which more than 10,000 have been killed.

Opposition sources said rebels had killed 20 soldiers in heavy fighting close to the border with Turkey.

They said six civilians and six rebels, including two commanders, had also been killed over the past 24 hours in fighting that began when the army launched an offensive with tanks and helicopters to retake the region around Atareb.
