The Challenge with Buying Technology ? Driving the Deal by ICN

By Steve Gutzman

? Technology ? information or otherwise ? has always been a tough subject to discuss, to explain, to comprehend, to predict, and most important, to buy.? Why is that?? One reason is that it is very difficult to predict its usefulness, longevity, or value over time.? Even the people who develop technology have a tough time with this.? Some examples ?

?The world potential market for copying machines is 5,000 at most.?? These are the words of an IBM executive in 1959 to the eventual founders of Xerox, saying the photocopier had no market large enough to justify production.

?There is no reason anyone would want a computer in their home.?? Such is a comment from Ken Olson, the president, chairman, and founder of Digital Equipment Corp., a manufacturer of big business mainframe computers, as he argued against the personal computer in 1977.

?There is practically no chance communications space satellites will be used to provide better telephone, telegraph, television, or radio service inside the United States.?? This was Thomas Craven, Federal Communications Commission member, in 1961.? The first commercial communications satellite went into service in 1965.
But there have been some predictions that proved to be pretty accurate and quite relevant to our industry.

Moore?s Law, which was coined by Intel co-founder Gordon Moore in 1965, states that the number of transistors on a chip doubles every 24 months.? It has been the guiding principle of the high-tech industry and explains why that sector has been able to consistently announce products that are smaller, more powerful, and less costly than their predecessors ? a price-performance curve that other industries can?t come close to.? The interesting thing about Moore?s Law is that it is not a law of physics.? Rather, it is just an uncannily accurate observation on what engineers and computer scientists, when organized properly, can do with silicon.

Gilder?s Law, named after the visionary author George Gilder, states that bandwidth grows at least three times faster than computer power.? This means that if computer power doubles every 24 months, then communication power doubles every eight months.? The backbone bandwidth on a single cable is now a thousand times greater than the average monthly traffic exchange across the entire global Internet five years ago.

And finally, Metcalf?s Law, named after Robert Metcalf, an originator of Ethernet and the founder of 3Com, states that the value of a network is proportional to the square of the number of users; so, as a network grows, the value of being connected to it grows exponentially, while the cost per user remains the same or is even reduced.

Whether examined separately or collectively, these three laws are driving our industry to new heights.? But they also present some big challenges for those of us who are in the ?buying trenches,? for we have to figure out how to put all this breakthrough technology to good use.

What we know about the world doubles every 10 years, and information technology is leading the way.? Magnetic nanodots will soon enable storage of over one billion pages of information in a chip that is one square inch in size.? This will be followed by imaginary interfaces, iMAX at home, content-centric networking, massively parallel cortical simulators, and quantum computers.? The pace of technology invention is accelerating exponentially, and how we buy it must keep pace.? And as we will see, not only is technology changing rapidly, but our vendors are also more sophisticated in how they bring their solutions to the marketplace and in the selling techniques they use.? Therefore, we cannot rely on the old tried-and-true buying techniques of yesteryear.? We must continually upgrade our buying skills, techniques, and processes.

Remember, if you don?t have a plan on how to buy technology, you will default to the vendors? plan on how they sell technology.

Steve Gutzman is a senior advisor at ICN and a 32-year veteran of? the high-tech industry.? You can contact him at

HOW TO INVEST & GET RICH (SLOWLY) | Barbara Friedberg ...

Investing is Not a Get Rich Quick Scheme

?Cash confiscates capital. Long term, after taxes and inflation, the return on cash is negative.? Catherine Keating

When you factor in the impact of inflation, you must achieve a return on your investments of greater than 3 percent or you are losing money.

With today?s difficult economic conditions, wages stagnating, and unemployment still rather high, it?s more important than ever to spend money sensibly. No matter how much you earn, it?s easy to spend it all.

Save and invest a small amount of your income, and over time you can become wealthy.

INVEST YOUR CASH & GROW YOUR WEALTH

There was a guy written up in the newspaper who made $100,000.00 per year. He lost his job and couldn?t find another. His only savings were $5,000.00. But, he had a great looking car and lots of fancy gadgets. These items did him no good when he was unemployed. Financial ruin was knocking at his door. Don?t be that guy!

With a small amount of saving and some smart disciplined investing, you can amass great amounts of wealth.

Learn?how long it takes to meet or surpass your financial goals.

Assumptions:

  • Save monthly.
  • Divide Savings among STOCK (60%) and BOND (40%) investments. The historical average annual return of 60% stock funds and 40% bond funds is 7.4%. To be on the conservative side, I?m going to assume an annual return for this portfolio of 7%.
  • Investment returns over the next 20-40 years approximate historical averages; STOCKS 9% BONDS 5%

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE?

At an annual return of 7% per year, how long until you are wealthy?

How Long Until I?m Wealthy? ? ? ?
7% return/year ? ? ?
? 20 years 30 years 40 years
$100/month $37,721 $121,997 $242,481
$500/month $260,463 $609,985 $1,312,407
$800/month $416,741 $975,977 $2,099,850

?

If you save $100 per month, in 40 years you will have $242,481.00. Increase that to $800.00 per month and you?ve got over 2 million dollars after 40 years investing.

Drop your monthly?investment?to $500.00 and invest for 30 years. You still wind up with a nest egg of over $600,000.00. Not bad.

Empowerment-It?s in your Hands

There are no?guarantees in life-but regular savings and?investing?will DEFINITELY make you?wealthier?than SPENDING!

Finding the balance between spending and saving leads to pleasure now and future security.

In talking with a book editor the other day, he explained to me that the best selling books were about trading options and market timing. He said, basic personal finance books were not selling well. I was so distressed with that information because basic and simple investing strategies lead to greater investment success than fancy market timing and trading strategies. The modern portfolio research substantiates this fact.

Sure, a few lucky folks manage to beat the market returns of a passive index based investing approach every year or so. But, long term, very few individuals or investment companies can beat this basic approach.

If you are patient and disciplined you can be the one with a six or seven figure investment portfolio upon retirement. There are lots of folks who make that goal in even less time.

Deleted Scenes: Alien hunter redirects her search to Earth-based funding

SETI scientist Jill Tarter retires from research to focus on raising funds to continue search for extraterrestrial life

Web edition : Tuesday, May 29th, 2012

Imagine if E.T. phoned Earth and heard, ?We?re sorry, no one is here to take your call right now. Please try again later.? Or if, after traveling for thousands of years, radio signals carrying the imprint of an alien technological civilization fell on dormant Earthly ears.

These possibilities could become reality if funding forces the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence to turn off the telescopes and quit searching for the answer to one of humankind?s most profound questions.

Jill Tarter isn?t going to let that happen.

After 35 years of eavesdropping on the stars, hoping to hear the intelligent murmurings of an extraterrestrial civilization, the SETI Institute?s lead alien hunter is hanging up her receiver and retiring as director of the Center for SETI Research.

But she?s not quitting the quest.

Instead of querying the heavens for signs of life, Tarter will query life on Earth for the funds needed to keep Earth?s ears online. ?We?re just going to make this a crusade,? she told me during an interview. (You can read it here.)

Physicist Gerry Harp has taken the reins from Tarter, the SETI Institute announced on May 22. ?It?s been challenging and exciting, a lot of new things to learn, a lot of new meetings to go to,? Harp says of his new role. ?But from what I?m seeing, Jill?s working at least as hard as she ever did before. I think we should acknowledge that she is still very much a part of the program.?

Tarter?s curiosity about life on other worlds erupted in the 1970s, fueled by a serendipitous merging of her ability to program a very old computer (a PDP-8/S ? ?I always thought the ?S? stood for ?stupid,?? she says), with a forward-looking proposal to find out whether other communicating civilizations exist in the galaxy. At the time, Tarter was in graduate school at the University of California, Berkeley. ?I couldn?t imagine anything more exciting or rewarding than trying to answer this old question,? Tarter says. ?I got hooked and I stayed hooked.?

In 1984, Tarter and several colleagues founded the SETI Institute, a nonprofit organization that has since grown to include more than a hundred people. Once focused mainly on detecting radio signals from extraterrestrial civilizations, the institute now employs scientists studying many factors important for the existence of alien life ? from Kepler team members who are detecting and characterizing exoplanetary systems, to astrobiologists searching for life in the most extreme environments on Earth and in the solar system?s exotic nooks and crannies.

But the institute needs money to keep searching. Once funded by a fraction of a percentage of NASA?s budget, SETI has relied on private donors to maintain the interstellar dial tone since 1993 ? courtesy of one senator, who killed any substantial SETI funding for the foreseeable future. ?For years, we became the four-letter S-word that you couldn?t actually say at NASA headquarters,? Tarter recalls.

Now, with the Allen Telescope Array ? a SETI array comprising 42 dishes (out of a planned 350) ? that funding is more crucial than ever. Last April, the array went into hibernation after funds dried up. In October, the array returned to operations, propelled by individual donors who contributed more than $200,000. Now, the telescope is under new management by SRI International, and is supported by a contract from the U.S. Air Force that tasks it with searching for orbiting space trash.

Still, 50 percent of the observing time is occupied with SETI searches. ?For SETI, it is the best thing around,? Harp says. ?We have 12 hours a day on this telescope. It?s very difficult to get 12 hours a day on any telescope in the world, and that?s what we have.?

Tarter is hoping to once again tap the enthusiasm of SETI supporters and build a lifeline that will support the search for centuries. ?SETI really is the investment in our future,? she said. ?If we detect a signal, we know we can have a long lifetime.? There will be proof that it is possible to become an old technology. Someone else did it. Therefore, damn it, we can do it.?

Blair says feared fight with Britain's media barons

LONDON (Reuters) - British leaders have no choice but to court powerful media barons such as Rupert Murdoch or risk savage press attacks which are "full on, full frontal, day in, day out," former Prime Minister Tony Blair told an inquiry on Monday.

Interrupted by a heckler who accused him of being a war criminal for supporting the U.S. invasion of Iraq, Blair paused briefly before continuing calmly to justify his ties to Murdoch with whom he developed a close friendship.

An unwillingness to take on the press in Britain has been cited by many as the reason a culture of illegality and phone hacking came about at Murdoch's tabloids, but Blair told the inquiry into media standards that he had had little choice.

He could either risk being torn apart by what he once described as the "feral beasts" of the media, or use them to get his policies implemented.

He never agreed a deal with Murdoch, he said, and only became godfather to his daughter after he left office. Calling the mogul three times in the days before the invasion of Iraq was also not particularly odd, he added.

"With any of these big media groups, you fall out with them, you watch out, because it is literally relentless and unremitting once that happens," Blair, looking tanned and smart in a navy suit and white shirt, told the inquiry.

"My view is that that is what creates this situation in which these media people get a power in the system that is unhealthy. I took the strategic decision to manage this and not confront it but the power of it is indisputable."

Blair, whose reputation for obsessive media management brought him so close to Murdoch that the tycoon would joke about their love making, said he became increasingly concerned about the unhealthy relationship between the media and politicians.

Blair is the most senior politician to date to appear before Leveson, an inquiry sparked by the phone hacking revelations but which has since broadened out to show the collusion between senior politicians, media tycoons and police.

"If you fall out with the controlling element of the Daily Mail, you are then going to be subject to a huge and sustained attack," said Blair, who governed Britain from 1997 to 2007 after rebranding the Labour Party.

"Managing these forces was a major part of what you had to do and was difficult," he said.

MURDOCH

The inquiry has so far focused on the close ties between Murdoch's empire and serving ministers, helping the opposition Labour Party leader Ed Miliband to consolidate his position with attacks on current British Prime Minister David Cameron.

The appearance of Blair had been seen as a potential threat to this approach, but the former prime minister was rarely troubled by the lead lawyer at the inquiry, reminding observers how he comfortably led his party to three election victories.

Describing what it feels like when a small section of the press decide to go after you, Blair said: "It's full on, full frontal, day in, day out and that is not journalism in my view. That's an abuse of power."

Sometimes using Murdoch's first name, Blair said it had been clear that the proprietor called the shots in his media empire, and not his newspaper editors. The two later became so close that having stepped down as prime minister, Blair became a godfather to Murdoch's daughter Grace at a ceremony on the banks of the river Jordan.

"Blair led the way in having no shame about courting Murdoch," said Ivor Gaber, professor of political journalism at City university. "He set the style and the standard and if you regard Cameron as the 'heir to Blair' then it's not exactly surprising that he followed suit."

Murdoch's papers also supported Blair in his unpopular decision to join the United States in the invasion of Iraq.

With anger still running high in Britain over Blair's role in the war, a protestor broke into court 73 to harangue him, entering through a supposedly secure entrance to stand between Blair and the chairman of the inquiry, Lord Leveson.

"This man is a war criminal," he yelled, as security guards tried to drag him from the court. Another protestor hit Blair's chauffer-driven black Range Rover with an egg as he later left the court.

"I'd forgotten just what a convincing, classy liar Blair is," one observer said on Twitter. "Not so much a testimony as a masterclass."

Blair set the tone for his relationship with Britain's press when, before his first election victory in 1997, he flew to Australia in 1995 to speak before a gathering of Murdoch's executives who had previously used their British tabloids to vilify his Labour Party predecessors.

The decision, mocked by rivals as an act of homage to the all-powerful media boss, infuriated much of his left-of-centre party who saw the Australian-born tycoon as a right-winger who had helped to keep them out of power for years.

But Blair's speech received a standing ovation and Murdoch indicated for the first time that he could be willing to switch the allegiance of his newspapers to the Labour Party.

"If our flirtation is ever consummated Tony then I suspect we will end up making love like porcupines, very, very carefully," he told him.

For the hundreds of thousands of people who enroll each year in federally registered apprenticeship programs, learning begins not in a college classroom, but, for instance, in the belly of a nuclear power plant.

An apprenticeship is a unique form of education, allowing participants to earn a paycheck while training for an occupation, both in classes and on the job. Traditional trades such as construction and manufacturing continue to draw the most students, but newer industries

Food Writer JJ Goode Drinks Iced Coffee Year-round, Likes Wine ...

Goode, drinking iced coffee despite the weather.

He won't ever admit it publicly, but food writer JJ Goode has what basically amounts to a dream job: As a cookbook writer ? you could call him a ghostwriter ? he spends a bulk of his time hanging out with the country's best chefs, alone, while they cook him amazing meals ? chefs like April Bloomfield (Goode co-wrote her first book; the duo is at work on a second) and Pok Pok's Andy Ricker, whose first book will come out next year. "Usually I'm writing in my coffee shop," he tells us. "But it's funny, you caught me on a week where I had more meetings than usual." We know Goode, and we also know that he says this every time we talk about his job. So why won't he just admit that it's a great gig? "Okay, it is pretty awesome. Just the fact that I get to spend two hours watching April make fresh pasta ? it's amazing." To read about that pasta, impromptu picnics, and one ill-advised octopus breakfast, continue on in this week's New York Diet.

    Friday, May 18
I had an iced espresso at Bittersweet, the coffee shop near my apartment I go to just about every morning. I?ve been going to this coffee shop to work since they opened, like, five years ago. The same people come in every day, so I get to say hi and chat a bit, like I?m in an office. Otherwise, freelancing would be really lonely.

I almost always get iced espresso. I think it?s probably heretical or something, but I really like cold coffee. Winter, summer, whenever.

I have a bad habit of not eating anything until noon, when I feel like I?m going to pass out. But since I had a meeting at one, I decided to go home at 10:30 and make myself an atypically early lunch: pasta with anchovies, lemon, and some arugula and asparagus that were slowing dying in my fridge. I used whole-wheat spiral pasta. Spiral because it?s the best pasta shape ever and whole wheat because it?s part of my wishy-washy attempt at healthy eating.

I?m starting to help someone with a cookbook (I signed a contract promising I wouldn?t reveal who ? that?s a first!), so we met at her apartment and I watched her cook. The first thing she made was really tasty: roasted asparagus with soft-boiled eggs and a spicy, yogurty sauce. I had a big serving with some bread, then I ate another soft-boiled egg, because we?d made a bunch of them to test the timing. We made some other stuff, including a few breakfast smoothies, too, so I guzzled a couple of glassfuls of a banana one and then one with papaya and blackberries.

My father-in-law and his wife were in from Philly, so for dinner we went to Fonda in Brooklyn. I worked with the chef, Roberto, on a cookbook, and he?s one of my favorite people in the world. We shared tasty things ? a braised duck enchilada-like thing with a creamy habanero sauce; little tacos, with fried fish that gets chopped up and tossed with cilantro, onions, and olive oil; fish with achiote butter and pickled red onions, which was awesome; and I kept stealing bites of my sis-in-law?s enchiladas in mole negro, because it?s sooooo good. Because it was Friday, I had several margaritas. Desserts (avocado cheesecake!), tequila, sleep.

    Saturday, May 19
Iced espresso at Bittersweet with wifey, then to the Fort Greene farmers' market. As usual, by the time I got home I was all jittery. I had some chorizo in my freezer, so I cooked a link and heated up some tortillas from Hot Bread Kitchen and made three little tacos with leftover salsa verde.

My father-in-law was so excited that I got to help with April Bloomfield?s cookbook and really wanted to try one of her restaurants. But for several reasons, going to the Spotted Pig or the Breslin on a Saturday night would have been too much. So I decided to have everyone over to my apartment and cook a bunch of stuff from her cookbook. I get overexcited when people come for dinner and cook, like, three too many dishes, messing two of them up entirely and serving dinner at eleven o'clock. Today, though, I decided to start cooking early, at like two-ish. While I cooked, wifey made me a little bowl of these tasty, tiny cucumbers with Greek yogurt and salt. So good! I had some iced ITO EN green tea from a giant jug, which is my favorite drink ever.

Somehow I got everything ready(ish) only half an hour after everyone got to my place: I made smooshed chicken liver on toast; carrot, avocado, and orange salad with cilantro; lamb meatballs with tomato sauce that has coriander and cumin and mint and yogurt all up in there. I also made potatoes fried in duck fat, but I tried using these awesome potatoes from the farmers' market, assuming that because the potatoes were tastier the result would be better, too. For some reason they weren?t quite as good as usual. Still, duck fat potatoes!

We drank really good wine with dinner. I know nothing about wine except that I love red wine that smells like manure and white wine that smells plastic-y, like a freshly opened Ninja Turtle action figure.

    Sunday, May 20
Bittersweet, iced espresso, and a few bites of scone. Around noon, my friend who works at the coffee shop handed me a little cheddar cheese snack. Score!

I got jittery, so I headed toward home. On the way, I passed by Roman?s and I don?t know why I pretended I was going home and not going in to sit at the bar. I?m not a big breakfast-food person, so I love how they don?t serve omelettes and French toast. Instead they just do really good food that occasionally has a poached egg on top. I managed to not order the carbonara (because of my increasing roundness). I?m also trying to eat less meat or at least be more thoughtful about it, so I ordered the ?wild greens and polenta soup,? which the waiter then informed me contained bits of oxtail and short rib. It was delicious.

I had an impromptu early picnic dinner in Fort Greene Park with wife and my lovely coffee-shop-worker friend. Leftover lamb meatballs, bread, feta-pinenut spread from Brooklyn Larder (a.k.a. the Happiest Place on Earth), arugula salad with carrots and radishes, strawberries with cr?me fraiche. And a beer. When I got home, it was this amazing British sitcom Peep Show and some gin with lime and seltzer. My wife is obsessed with her seltzer-making machine, so I?m always putting seltzer in stuff. I really want to try carbonating my iced green tea, but (a) she won?t let me and (b) it does actually sound kind of gross.

    Monday, May 21
It was raining hard, so I was lazy and got to the shop at nine-ish and had my iced espresso. Jitters a few hours later, then home. I had finished all my lamb meatballs yesterday, but I had a bunch of sauciness left over, so I was dying to make pasta for the sauce. But my stove wouldn?t turn on! Why?!

I ended up microwaving the lamby tomato sauce and toasting some of a baguette (ok, like, two-thirds of a baguette). I also had some smooshed chicken liver left over, so I had a shmear of that on bread, too.

I made myself a smoothie with yogurt and frozen berries and flax seeds, which have antioxidants or something healthy in them and are actually kind of fun to nibble on once they?re busted up.

I had an early dinner because I had an indoor soccer game (fighting roundness!) and made spaghetti with asparagus and breadcrumbs, which I had leftover from meatball cooking. And I found some corn from last summer in the freezer (I was so proud of myself for thinking to freeze it, but then I forgot to eat it all winter) and added some shallots and some droopy old herbs.

    Tuesday, May 22
Early iced espresso. I had a meeting near Koreatown, so I went into the city and got breakfast first. I popped into a place at random (New Wonjo) and ate bibimbap with octopus and of course picked from the little dishes Korean restaurants give you for free, including green beans with tiny anchovies and what tasted like steamed parsley (is that a thing?). Oof, turned out not to be the best idea for breakfast. Stomach hurting. I pounded an iced green tea.

Next meeting was a cooking session with my asparagus-and-soft-boiled-egg chef and we made some simple dishes, including an awesome kale and kumquat salad and a tuna and white bean salad that tasted healthy, but in a good way.

Still not that hungry around dinnertime. But I had bought some stinging nettles on Saturday and was determined to use them. I made a little saut? with mushrooms. It was okay, not particularly good. I had it with some bread spread with leftover cr?me fraiche (argh, roundness!), then a bit later, I felt like having something comfy, which meant two nice Hot Bread Kitchen tortillas with lime and salt.

    Wednesday, May 23
Iced espresso. Two rugelach. No octopus.

I was super-excited because I had a cooking session with April, for her next cookbook. We met at the Spotted Pig and I watched her make fresh pasta for a couple hours, which made me feel like the luckiest person in the world. By the time she cut tagliatelle, we were both starving. While I was waiting for the water to boil, I had a slice from a giant ham someone gave her. Then she tossed the pasta with asparagus and cr?me fraiche and Parmesan and I had a big bowl. So good. Even she had a whole bowl, and she?s usually too disappointed in her own food ? even when I think it?s phenomenal ? to eat more than a bite or two. She?s funny like that.

Rarely do I have two cooking sessions in a day, but after April rolled out an easy tart dough for us to cook the next day, I took off to meet my soft-boiled-egg chef and she made a truly awesome roast chicken (I gobbled a leg and the tasty tail/butt thingie). I drank some smoothie and had a bite or two of a tasty shellfish-and-cauliflower dish.

That night, I had soccer again at a weird time, so I rushed home and ate a slice of pizza from the place across the street. After soccer, I had a bowl of leftover asparagus and breadcrumb pasta with some of the corn all mixed up.

Has Cory Booker hurt his own political career?

Don't look for a prime time speaking slot at the Democratic National Convention for Cory Booker, but his defense of Wall Street ? and criticism of the Obama campaign ? won't hurt his standing with moderates or Wall Street donors.

    By Peter Grier,?Staff writer / May 23, 2012

Newark Mayor Cory Booker speaks onstage at Gospelfest in Newark, NJ, on May 12.

Has Cory Booker hurt his own political career? That?s a valid question in the wake of his misstep last Sunday on NBC?s ?Meet the Press.? Mr. Booker ? the Democratic mayor Newark, N.J. ? called President Obama?s anti-Bain Capital campaign ads ?nauseating." He and the Obama campaign have been in full damage-control mode ever since.

Well, one thing?s for sure ? a prime time Booker speech at the Democratic National Convention is now pretty unlikely. That would only cause the ?Meet the Press? clip to run in rotation on cable news again. So the Newark mayor, often described as a rising star, won?t get the exposure that then-little known Barack Obama did when he delivered the DNC keynote address in 2004.

Plus, his own ties to Wall Street have now become press fodder. On Monday, the liberal website Think Progress revealed that Bain officials and others in the finance industry contributed more than $565,000 to Booker?s first mayoral campaign in 2002. Stories about links between financial groups and Booker, former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, and other Democrats who criticized the Bain ads came out so fast that some on the right suspect they were planted by the Obama camp.

?I expected them to send out oppo research on Republicans.... But I don?t think I ever would?ve predicted they?d be digging up dirt on their own campaign surrogates,? wrote Ben Howe on the conservative RedState blog.

Booker?s in-state party rivals have even begun tweaking him over his misstep. Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D) of New Jersey, for instance, holds a seat that Booker is rumored to want for himself. On Tuesday, Senator Lautenberg said Booker?s words were ?a terrible blow, in my view, for President Obama."
