"Finding Nemo" was and remains the gold standard against which all other modern animated films are measured, a classic from the day it premiered. </p> <p>In this seamless blending of technical brilliance and storytelling verve, the Pixar team has made something as marvelously soulful and innately, fluidly American as jazz.</p> <p>Nemo, with its ravishing underwater fantasia, manages to trump the design glamour of earlier Pixar films.</p> <p>Gill is Platoon's Sgt. Elias if he'd survived Sgt. Barnes' treachery and returned to civilian life weary and hard-bitten from his experiences. And also a fish.</p> <p>Finding Nemo 3D is a quality post-conversion experience that successfully enhances the 2003 film's original standout visuals.</p> <p>The 3D gives the images a little more depth but they already had heft and weight. The 3D is a money-making gimmick, nothing more.</p> <p> A great blend of storytelling and technology. </p> <p>It's downright curmudgeonly to remain focused on the negatives when the rest of the picture is saturated with invention and wit.</p> <p>It's bright, it's beautiful and it hasn't aged a day. So why, then, do we need to see it in 3-D?</p> <p>A rare example of a movie that not only survives its 3-D conversion but benefits from it</p> <p>It was as funny as I remember and brilliant because it is subtle. It just knocks it out of the park. I love everything about this movie, one of my favorite Pixar movies of all time, 5/5 Schmoes. The new sound/3D adds to the greatness that is Nemo.</p> <p>If you're fishing for fun in an ocean of movie mediocrity, grab the kids or the grandkids, fork out a few extra bucks and see this one in three-dimensions.</p> <p>It's a great movie, so much fun, an acheivement that should be enjoyed by children of all ages and worth seeing it in 3D.</p> <p>Sea-worthy w/enhanced visual lure and rich, humorous characters set in a double narrative; this 3D revisit allows us to fall overboard all over again.</p> <p>If ever there was a film that wasn't broke, this is it. So naturally they converted it into 3D for a special re-release this weekend. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei told reporters. The ships withdrew soon after being ordered to leave the area by Japanese coast guards, Japan?s Kyodo news agency reported.</p><p>The sovereignty dispute has flared up again since Tuesday, when the Japanese government purchased three of the five contested islands from the Japanese family that had owned them. The uninhabited islands are known as the Diaoyu in China and as the Senkaku in Japan.</p><p>Beijing clearly had to react, if only because popular sentiment is running high on the issue in China; protestors have staged demonstrations in a number of cities, Japanese citizens have been assaulted on the streets of Shanghai, tempers are flaring in Internet posts and nationalism is rampant.</p><p>Aside from that, the islands could also be valuable; ownership of them gives rights over rich fishing grounds and a claim to potentially huge oil reserves under the nearby seabed.</p><p>Senior Chinese officials have limited themselves, however, to strong words and saber rattling. Today?s edition of the ?People?s Daily,? the ruling Communist party?s official organ, carried a full page article detailing China?s recent military modernization program, for example.</p><p>On Thursday, in a thinly veiled hint at retaliatory economic steps, Chinese Vice Minister of Commerce Jiang Zengwei told a news briefing that "with Japan's so-called purchase of the islands, it will be hard to avoid negative consequences for Sino-Japanese economic and trade ties."</p><p>Behind the bluster, though, it might well be that Beijing has decided privately to accept the Japanese government?s explanation that it bought the islands to prevent further trouble.</p><p>Shintaro Ishihara, the stridently nationalist governor of Tokyo, had announced his own plan for the Tokyo municipality to buy the Diaoyu/Senkaku islands. Last Tuesday, China began issuing weather forecasts for the islands and their surrounding waters, after publishing baseline coordinates setting out the Chinese view of which bits of rock and water belong to Beijing.</p><p>Eventually, tensions will doubtless fade, China and Japan will quietly acknowledge that they can never resolve the issue of sovereignty, and both sides will end up doing some sort of resource-sharing deal, just as they have elsewhere in the East China Sea. Their credit scores were sub-par. But this Christmas, the Clarks will move from their rundown rental into a brand new, four-bedroom home in an amenity-loaded development outside of Lakeland, Fla. All without paying a dime.</p> <p>They are part of a new rehab program being offered by some U.S. home builders, doling out sophisticated financial advice to prospective buyers who would not normally qualify for loans.</p> <p>Just five years after the biggest housing meltdown in generations, some consumer experts are wondering if builders are up to their old tricks again.</p> <p>?You have people applying for loans that there?s no way they can pay, but it doesn?t matter because the ability to repay isn?t the basis of the loan. It?s the ability to pass underwriting so the loan can be sold,? says Washington, D.C.-based bankruptcy attorney Brett Weiss.</p> <p>The financial advisors go by names such as ?mortgage advisors,? ?credit advocates? or ?loan officers.? They help prospective customers create budgets and slash spending. Some also help out with ?credit repair,? the practice of analyzing credit reports to determine the best strategies for raising scores as quickly as possible.</p> <p>The Clarks thought they would remain renters forever. But early in the summer, a friend recommended they meet Janet Backman, a sales agent for Southern Homes.</p> <p>During that first meeting, Ms. Backman pored over the Clarks? financials and decided to put them in what she calls her ?incubator.?</p> <p>That?s the process Ms. Backman uses to convert the credit-challenged into homebuyers within a matter of months. It drives her crazy that people in her area pay more to rent than to own, with monthly mortgage costs now lower than rent in nearly every major U.S. metro area.</p> <p>The Clarks had no credit cards and paid for everything with cash. So as Ms. Backman talked with them that first day, she simultaneously signed them up for credit cards online.</p> <p>Then she told the couple that, if they made US$50 worth of purchases each month, but only paid the balance down to US$25, their credit scores would likely rise immediately.</p> <p>Within a month, she got the couple?s scores up enough to qualify for the zero-down, government-backed loan she secured for them through a partner lender.</p> <p>Southern Home?s sales agents have sold 162 homes so far this year, with nearly all buyers getting similar advice and loan terms.</p> <p>Says Backman: ?Every time I hear about how hard it is to purchase a home, I?m thinking, what planet are they living on??</p> <p>These fiscal rehabs are one reason many builders are boosting sales, even though most loans that banks are underwriting now meet stringent government standards.</p> <p>PulteGroup Inc. said in July that its financial program could help its sales for some time. On Monday, Lennar Corp. said revenue from home sales rose 33% last quarter from the same quarter a year earlier. Orders for homes rose 44%, helped by the 25% increase in membership in its Homebuyers Club since last year.</p> <p>Providing financial therapy solves a huge problem for the builders: How to sell to first-time home buyers when so many younger consumers are saddled with student debt and bad credit.</p> <p>The number of people aged 25-to-34 who bought homes in 2011 fell to 27%, the lowest share in the past decade, according to the National Association of Realtors.</p> <p>Rising student debt has played at least some role in that decline, analysts said. According to the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, about 50% of young people that started college in 2003 were paying more than 10% of their income on student debt.</p> <p>? Australian banks have been competing fiercely for deposits to reduce their dependence on offshore funding, while households have been keen to save more in the wake of the global financial crisis.</p> <p> Since the end of 2007 the amount of money stashed in bank deposits has climbed by A$260 billion, or almost 60 percent.</p> <p> "Australians are continuing their love affair with <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348726811_7">defensive assets</span> such as cash and bank deposits," said James.</p> <p> "And it's not just Aussie consumers, but companies and even superannuation funds," he added. (Legal Newsline) - Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster filed three separate lawsuits on Wednesday against individuals and their companies for allegedly misleading consumers with mortgage-modification schemes.<p>Heartland Loss Mitigation LLC and owner Colleen Kelly, Mader Law Group LLC and owner Eric Mader, and CAPLAW, P.A. and owner Jim Caplan were named as defendants in the three lawsuits. The companies allegedly engaged in multiple unfair or deceptive practices.</p><p>"Today's lawsuits continue my office's efforts to help Missouri homeowners who are trying to keep their homes as they work their way out of tough situations," Koster said. Quantum dots are nanostructures of semiconducting materials that behave a lot like single atoms and are very easy to produce. Given their special properties, researchers see huge potential for quantum dots in technological applications. Before this can happen, however, we need a better understanding of how the electrons "trapped" inside them behave. Dresden physicists have recently observed how electrons in individual quantum dots absorb energy and emit it again as light.</p> <p>Their results were recently published in the journal <em>Nano Letters.</em></p> <p>Quantum dots look like miniscule pyramids. Inside each of these nano-pyramids are always only one or two electrons that essentially "feel" the constricting walls around them and are therefore tightly constrained in their mobility. Scientists from Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), TU Dresden. TU Dresden and the Leibniz Institute for solid State and Materials Research Dresden (IFW) have now studied the special energy states of the electrons trapped inside individual quantum dots.</p> <p><strong>Sharp energy levels</strong></p> <p>The behaviour of electrons in a material essentially determines its properties. Being spatially constrained in all three spatial dimensions, electrons inside a nano-pyramid can only occupy very specific energy levels -- which is why quantum dots are also called "artificial atoms." Where these energy levels lie depends on the chemical composition of the semiconductor material as well as the size of the nano-pyramid. "These sharply defined energy levels are exploited, for example, in highly energy-efficient lasers based on quantum dots. The light is produced when an electron drops from a higher energy level into a lower one. The energy difference between the two levels determines the colour of the light," Dr. Stephan Winnerl of HZDR explains.</p> <p><strong>Seeing electrons inside individual quantum dots</strong></p> <p>The researchers in Dresden working with Dr. Winnerl were recently the first to succeed in scanning transitions between energy levels in single quantum dots using infrared light. Although, they could only do this after overcoming a certain hurdle: While the pyramids of indium arsenide or indium gallium arsenide form spontaneously during a specific mode of crystal growth, their size varies within a certain range. Studying them with infrared light, for example, one obtains blurred signals because electrons in different sized pyramids respond to different infrared energies. This is why it is so important to obtain a detailed view of the electrons trapped inside a single quantum dot.</p> <p>The scientists approached this task with the special method of scanning near-field microscopy. Laser light is shone onto a metallic tip less than 100 nanometers thick, which strongly collimates the light to a hundred times smaller than the wavelength of light, which is the spatial resolution limit for "conventional" optics using lenses and mirrors. By focusing this collimated light precisely onto one pyramid, energy is donated to the electrons, thereby exciting them to a higher energy level. This energy transfer can be measured by watching the infrared light scattered from the tip in this process. While near-field microscopy involves major signal losses, the light beam is still strong enough to excite the electrons inside a nano-pyramid. The method is also so sensitive that it can create a nanoscale image in which the one or two electrons inside a quantum dot stand out in clear contrast. In this fashion, Stephan Winnerl and his colleagues from HZDR, plus physicists from TU and IFW Dresden, studied the behaviour of electrons inside a quantum dot in great detail, thereby contributing towards our understanding of them.</p> <p><strong>Infrared light from the free electron laser</strong></p> <p>The infrared light used in the experiments came from the free electron laser at HZDR. This special laser is an ideal infrared radiation source for such experiments because the energy of its light can be adjusted to precisely match the energy level inside the quantum dots. The laser also delivers such intense radiation that it more than makes up for the unavoidable losses inherent to the method.</p> <p>"Next, we intend to reveal the behaviour of electrons inside quantum dots at lower temperatures," Dr. Winnerl says. "From these experiments, we hope to gain even more precise insights into the confined behavior of these electrons. In particular, we want to gain a much better understanding of how the electrons interact with one another as well as with the vibrations of the crystal lattice." We, along with our other founder/partner Erin Mester, decided the world needs this community so that everyone can manifest their dreams!</p> <h3>What does your typical day look like?</h3> <p>I don?t have a typical schedule time-wise. I focus my days to have a balance of the following three things, with item #1 being 70% of each day:</p> <ol><li>DreamItAlive.com (my main focus is on strategic partnerships and scaling the business)</li> <li>Public speaking/writing (I am currently finishing up my upcoming entrepreneurship book scheduled for release this fall 2012)</li> <li>Advisory work and giving back (I am an adviser to various consumer internet ventures and am helping to lead efforts for various entrepreneurship groups, including Tech Coast Venture Network, the largest Orange County-based entrepreneurship group, Startup California, and the Young Entrepreneurship Council)</li> </ol><h3>How do you bring ideas to life?</h3> <p>I first like to incubate them in a quiet place, often via meditation, to visualize the outcome. I then map them out?sometimes using goal-setting tools and even adding to my own dreamboard. And then I leverage my network and resources to make them happen.</p> <h3>What?s one trend that really excites you?</h3> <p>The current state of entrepreneurship. There?s never been a better time to fulfill your passion and dream venture. There seems to be more available resources, mentors, smart investors and like-minded dreamers and believers with energy to guide you.</p> <h3>What was the worst job you ever had and what did you learn from it?</h3> <p>I don?t have a ?worst job,? since I learn from every experience to do better in the next one and to gain relationships. Clearly, a high-traffic retail store was one of the toughest environments I ever worked in, and I encourage everyone to try it since you have to cater immediately to customers? needs and wants.</p> <h3>If you were to start again, what would you do differently?</h3> <p>Nothing; everything happens for a reason. Every day I learn from the past and focus on how to be excellent moving forward.</p> <h3>As an entrepreneur, what is the one thing you do over and over and recommend everyone else do?</h3> <p>Meditate one to two times per day. No matter how busy you are, your soul needs some ?chill? time to reflect, prepare and visualize your dream life.</p> <h3>What is one failure you had as an entrepreneur, and how did you overcome it?</h3> <p>I have had many, but one is not pivoting early enough for my first business venture. I let my ego get in the way, and I thought I could overcome this at any cost. While I did pivot later, I made a lot of mistakes in the process to deflect this. I learned that sometimes it?s okay to fail fast and move on.</p> <h3>What is one business idea that you?re willing to give away to our readers?</h3> <p>There is so much opportunity in the e-book format and publishing arena. The fact that almost every major consumer tech company (Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Apple, Sony, etc.) is creating more tablets and mobile phones for content consumption should tell you this.</p> <h3>If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be and how would you go about it?</h3> <p>Adapt tools like dreamboards and meditation for school curricula. One can?t rise solely on textbooks and structured lessons. Students also need creative time so they can dream. All the print media there would futz with things and the go to press. This gave reviewers a month lead time, if not longer. I used to write for Laptop magazine and we had lead times of three months. Now, with the always-on Internet, reviews go up as quickly as possible. In fact, when you see a bunch of reviews go up at exactly the same time its because the company set an embargo for that date. Rather than risk looking slow, all the major sites pop up their reviews in unison. I shouted in the phone?s direction, balancing it on my knees to avoid police detection. ?Um, hi,? a gentle voice on the other end replied. ?This is Naomi Wolf??</p> <p>Hearing Wolf?s voice on the other end of the line (she was calling to arrange details for our interview the next day) felt strangely familiar, probably because I have been listening to Wolf speak for my entire adult life. I was 6 years old when 1991?s <em>The Beauty Myth</em> vaulted her to feminist icon status. By the time I had gained some semblance of my own feminist consciousness, the book?s argument?that impossible physical demands on female bodies force women to work a ?third shift? in service of the beauty industry?had become so culturally pervasive, it felt more like conventional wisdom than star-making insight. Driving away from the airport with my friend in tow, we talked about how, as twentysomething feminists, we felt both closely aligned and oddly removed from Wolf?s work. ?By the time I heard about the book, I feel like I?d already learned all of that stuff from the Internet,? my friend told me. ?It was like, ?No duh!? ?</p> <p>Wolf?s new book?<em>Vagina: A Biography</em>?is unlikely to inspire a similar cultural revolution. The wide-ranging vaginal probe jumps off from Wolf?s own medical journey to reclaim her transcendent ?Technicolor orgasms,? surveys the scientific literature on female sexuality, then draws the conclusion that a previously undiscovered ?vagina-mind connection? (no duh) stretches beyond neuroscience to make up a ?part of the female soul? (just ? no). ?I think it?s really interesting to note that it?s gotten some of the best reviews of my career, and of course the most hostile,? Wolf tells me when we meet for coffee the next day.</p> <p>Mostly, though, they?ve been hostile: The effort has been dismissed as silly, self-parodying, childish, and scientifically inaccurate. Its argument is essentialist (?having discovered that every woman is sexually unique, she proceeds to write 300 more pages arguing that they are all the same,? Katha Pollitt wrote in <em>The Nation</em>), its aesthetics dippy (?it?s lucky vaginas can?t read,? Pollitt added). And those weaknesses compound upon one another. Wolf defines a woman?s suite of sexual needs as ?The Goddess Array,? describes the vagina as a ?Goddess-shaped? hole, and says that her study sheds light on the experience of ?the Universal or Divine Feminine.?</p> <p>But <em>Vagina</em>?s contents are not universal?in the book?s introduction, Wolf notes that she?s focusing primarily on the ?exploration of heterosexual women?s physical and emotional interactions with men,? and suggests that ?the physiology of lesbian and bisexual eros? and the ?lesbian and bisexual mind-body connection? deserve ?books of their own.? <em>Vagina</em> is, like much mainstream feminist literature (and this article, too), written from the perspective of a white, straight woman.</p> <p>When I bring this up, Wolf takes issue with the characterization of herself as ?straight??she says she doesn?t ?believe in those categories,? though she employs them throughout the book?and says that <em>Vagina</em>?s nonexistent exploration of lesbian, bisexual, and trans sexuality is the result of larger structural inequalities, not her specific feminine perspective. ?There?s nobody proposing, ?let?s study lesbian sexuality, bisexuality, transgender issues, let?s study intersex.? You can?t fund it in America,? she says. ?I was trying to be honest about the nature of some of the data I was looking at. ? I didn?t want to tokenize.
