Frank Darabont on the set of 2007's The Mist
Three-time Oscar nominee Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile) will receive the Extraordinary Contribution to Filmmaking Award at this year's Austin Film Festival. He'll be recognized at an Oct. 20 reception at the Austin Club, along with fellow honorees Eric Roth (Distinguished Screenwriter Award) and Chris Carter (Outstanding Television Writer Award). In recent years, Darabont has shifted his focus to television. He executive produced AMC zombie-drama The Walking Dead, which won the AFI TV Programme of the Year award in 2010; in 2011, AMC abruptly fired Darabont, adding further fuel to the public perception of an acrimonious relationship with its creative talent. More recently, Darabont has been developing television show L.A. Noir for TNT.
On Sunday, Oct. 21, the AFF screenwriting conference will host an hourlong "Conversation with Frank Darabont." For more programming highlights and badge info, see www.austinfilmfestival.com.
